Set a default value for empty strings

The reasons for Europe s defection are eminently geopolitical.

A relapse into regional war and Islamist terror? Or will developments take an unforeseeable turn?

But there is a real danger that the pendulum is beginning to swing back, leading to a reversal of that liberalization process.
